Pawsitive Thoughts For Trixie, Please!!!

Hi everyone... this is Trixie, Lily and Sammy-Joe's Mama. They don't usually let me use their blog, but I can type faster than them and we're all a little upset right now. We needed to reach out to our bloggy friends in a time like this. Trixie had a seizure.
I (Nicki) was sitting on the couch using the computer, with Trixie asleep on the couch next to me, and Lily chewing her bone on the floor. Suddenly Trixie flew off the couch, literally flew, as if she leapt but without using her legs! She was laying on the floor and twitching around. Lily got upset and tried to bite Trixie (I think she thought Trixie was going after her bone or something.) I yanked Lily away from her and shouted for my mom, who came and saw what was happening, but all we could do was sit on the floor and pet her and talk to her while she twitched.
It only lasted for a moment. Then she just lay there and looked at us with a dazed but loving expression on her face, like "I don't know what just happened, but how nice of you all to surround me and pet me!"
She did have one other seizure once, maybe a year ago. She had been standing at the top of the stairs and then suddenly stumbled down the stairs as if she couldn't use her legs, and was shaking. At the time my parents were doubtful that she had a seizure, but took her to the vet anyway a few days later. The vet also doubted it and thought Trixie's legs just cramped up or something. But this time, both of my parents witnessed it and it was for sure a seizure!
They don't want to take her to the emergency vet because it just lasted a minute, so she will probably go within a few days.

Please send us your positive thoughts and prayers that my sweet Trixie-Pixie will be healthy and that this isn't going to become a huge and terrible ordeal for her. She's just the best doggie anyone could ask for, so sweet and loving, and she's only 4 years old.
Thanks... I knew talking to you would make me feel better! Trixie, Lily and Sammy-Joe say thank-you too...
If anyone has experienced anything like this with their dog, maybe you could give us some advice too...
Thanks...
With love,
from Nicki

We are so sorry that Trixie had to go through something like this. Maybe the vet will be able to give you some answers. She is young and otherwise healthy so keep pawsitive thoughts.

We will keep Trixie in our thoughts and prayers.

We're keeping Trixie in our thoughts and purrs. Our sister Pixie used to have seizures, and we know it can be upsetting to see.

When they have seizures it is definitely a scary thing. Our first Siberian had them. Sometimes medication can help control them. We will keep our paws crossed and postive vibes are being sent your way.

That sounds so scary and we have not gone through that, so we can't offer advice. I know Hound Girl had seizures with Fred recently. We are sending drool and keeping our paws crossed for Trixie. Sniffs, The HoundDogs

Our first Greyhound, Treat, had epilepsy and she had grand mal seizures on a regular basis -- usually every three weeks. There are a lot of things that can cause seizures, from low thyroid to epilepsy to head trauma to infection or even tumors. We waited for a while to see if the problem would go away, and then we had to through a series of tests. Epilepsy isn't something that you can test for, it's determined after ruling everything else out. Treat's seizures were lasting longer than fifteen minutes at a time, however, and we knew we had to do something. We tried potassium bromide (KBr) after hearing that it was easier on a dog's system, but it didn't work for her. After we started her on phenobarbital she never had another seizure, though. For some dogs, KBr works, for some phenobarb works. Some need a mixture of both.

What I do want to stress is that Treat became a different dog after she started the phenobarbital. It was like she'd been walking on eggshells and could finally live her life again. She led a VERY active life doing meet and greets, nursing home visits, taking me for walks and just living life to the fullest!

Seizures..yes, they are very scary. Our 10-year-old Chinese Crested, April, started having seizures 4 or 5 years ago. She only experienced mild ones at first, and then only about 1 every year so the vet didn't feel it was necessary to put her on medication. Then in 2008 she had one that was a little worse. The vet then started her on liquid Phenobarbital, twice a day. She has not had another seizure since starting the medication. Ask your vet if he feels that medication for Trixie is needed at this point. Also, you can get a lot of information if you put "Canine Seizures" in your search box. There are many good articles out there about it. You did the right thing for Trixie. Just let the seizure run its course and try to keep her from hurting herself by banging into the furniture or walls. Our prayers are with you. It's very scary but not the end of the world.
